Curtains or blinds? It depends on the room

Where curtains beat blinds, where blinds beat curtains, and why the answer for a bedroom is often both.

Curtains and blinds are not really rivals. They do different jobs, and in the rooms that matter most, they work best together.

Where curtains win

Big or awkward windows, where a blind would need several panels and still look like a compromise. Curtains cover the whole opening and the wall around it.

Rooms that need softness: a lounge with hard floors and leather furniture feels different with curtains on the glass.

Cold rooms, where a lined curtain adds a layer of warmth that a blind alone does not.

Where blinds win

Bedrooms, where you want darkness and a blind sits tight to the glass. Curtains alone usually leak light at the top and the sides.

Kitchens and bathrooms, where fabric is a harder life and a wipeable blind makes more sense.

Small rooms, where a curtain stack eats floor space the room does not have.

The combination that works

A roller blind for light control plus curtains for softness and warmth is the standard answer for a main bedroom or a lounge that faces the afternoon sun.

It also solves the light leak: the blind handles the glass, the curtains handle the edges and the look.

Measuring and fitting are different jobs

A blind is measured to the opening, so the reveal depth and squareness decide everything. A curtain is measured to the space around the opening: how far past the window the track runs, how high above it, and where the hem finishes.

That is why a curtain can fix a window a blind struggles with. It covers the awkward edges and the wall around them, and nobody notices the joinery is out of square because it is behind fabric.

Where the tracks go

A track on the ceiling makes the room look taller and lets the curtains run the full width. A track on the wall is simpler where the ceiling is not convenient, but it leaves a gap above the curtain for light.

If the ceiling is still open, a recessed track hides the track entirely and closes that gap. That has to be decided before the gib goes on, not after.

Questions about this

Which lining for a bedroom?

Blockout, with a thermal layer if the room is cold.

Can you fit curtains on an existing track?

Yes, if it is sound. We will tell you if it is not worth keeping.
