A thermal blind adds an insulating layer at the window, where a lot of a room's heat leaves and a lot of its cold comes in. In an older Auckland house with single glazing, that layer is often the cheapest comfort improvement available.
It is not a heat pump and we will not pretend otherwise. What it does is slow the transfer: the room holds its warmth longer at night and feels less cold next to the glass in the morning.
