A blockout blind uses a coated fabric that does not let light through. The difference between a blockout blind and a dark-coloured ordinary one is obvious at 6am in December: one dims the room, the other actually stops the light getting past the fabric.
The fitting matters as much as the fabric. Light comes around the edges, so we look at the reveal depth and whether the blind sits inside the window or over the face, and we will tell you honestly what darkness you can expect from that particular window.
Blockout Blinds in Pokeno
Pokeno is 28 minutes from our workshop, at the southern edge of Auckland, the last town before the Bombay hills. Much of the housing is new, built as the town has grown, with large joinery and open-plan living.
That shapes what we recommend. We measure the actual windows, look at which way they face and how the room is used, and quote on that rather than on a brochure. If you also want shutters in the same rooms, we can quote both on the one visit.
How it works on your windows
Bedrooms that stay dark
The usual reason people call: a street light, an early sunrise, or a shift worker sleeping in the day.

A blind inside a shallow reveal will always leak at the edges. We check and tell you before you order.

Questions we get in Pokeno
Do you charge for a measure in Pokeno?
No. The in-home measure and quote is free across Pokeno, with a minimum of five blinds or coverings, and no obligation. Pokeno is 28 minutes from our Manurewa workshop.
Will a blockout blind make the room completely dark?
It stops light through the fabric, but light still comes around the edges unless the blind is fitted in a cassette with side channels. We will tell you what your window can realistically achieve.
Can I have blockout on a wide window?
Yes, and wide windows need more than one blind or a cassette to keep the middle from sagging. We will work that out on the measure.
Is blockout fabric heavy?
It is heavier than a light-filtering fabric, which is one reason wide blockout blinds are often motorised or split into panels.
Does it keep heat in?
It helps a little at night, but a thermal lining or a curtain is the better tool for warmth. Blockout is primarily about light.
